In hindsight, the E46 M3 marked the end of an era in several key ways as well, endowed as it was with the ultimate evolution of BMW’s classic, naturally-aspirated straight-six and the kind of understated, function-led styling that for decades defined the best of “German Design.” The car was among the first M products to sell in really large numbers, and BMW exported more than 43,000 to North America between 20. From day one it offered extraordinarily adjustable and refined chassis balance, an accurate, informative steering rack and some of the best induction noises available anywhere, at any time and for any cost. We’re big fans of the M3 in all its varied forms, but even from new, the third-generation or E46 platform car was a clear standout.
